คำบุพบท

คือคำที่แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง คำนามหรือคำสรรพนาม กับคำอื่นในประโยค

Sue and Sam are are in the room. ซูและแซมอยู่ในห้อง

Sue and Sam – ซูและแซม เป็นคำนาม เป็นประธานของประโยค

are – อยู่ เป็นคำกริยา เป็นกริยาของประโยค

in – ใน เป็นคำบุพบท แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง

“ซูและแซม” กับ “ห้อง”

the room – ห้อง เป็นคำนาม เป็นส่วนที่ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์

The cat is sleeping under the bed. แมวนอนหลับอยู่ใต้เตียง

The cat – แมว เป็นคำนาม เป็นประธานของประโยค

is sleeping – หลับ เป็นคำกริยา เป็นกริยาของประโยค

under – ใต้ เป็นคำบุพบท แสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง

“แมว” กับ “เตียง”

the bed – เตียง เป็นคำนาม เป็นส่วนที่ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์

คำบุพบท (preposition) แบ่งออกเป็นชนิดใหญ่ๆได้ ดังนี้

1. Prepositions of Places – คำบุพบทเกี่ยวกับสถานที่ หมายถึง คำบุพบทที่บอกตำแหน่งแหล่งที่ว่าสิ่งนั้นๆ
อยู่ที่ไหน บ้างก็เรียกบุพบทเหล่านี้ว่า preposition of positions เช่น

We put the flowers around the table. Thailand is between Burma and Laos. Thailand is among Burma ,Laos, and Malaysia. The children sit at the desk. I live at Meesuk Village. They came from Japan. I go to school by bus. They live behind the hill. Her house stands by the river. Our school is near the lake. It stands beside the tree. The dog is on the chair. She lives on Sukhumvit Street. We live in town. They live in Udornthani.

2. Prepositions of Time – คำบุพบทเกี่ยวกับเวลา หมายถึง คำบุพบทที่บอกกาลเวลา เช่น
